Episode 4: Using Contrast for Stronger Stories

We all love reading stories that have some sort of emotional impact on us. As authors, we want our writing to evoke that kind of emotion in our readers as well. One way to do that is by using contrast to create layers to our writing.

In today’s episode, we take a look at how contrast can improve our writing. I give several examples from songs that allow us to look at different types of contrast so that you can easily use them in your own stories. We review different literary devices, look at examples of contrast, and discuss why using contrast is beneficial.

I’d love to see your examples of contrast or answer any questions you have! Tag me or message me on Instagram @ariellehadfield.authorcoach or join me in a coaching call where we can discuss your story and dive deeper into your questions.

In this episode we cover:

  • Overview of literary devices
  • Examples of types of contrast
  • Exploring contrast in songs
  • Prompts to practice writing with contrast
